BLÜCHER onboard the Maersk Triple-E

World’s largest container ship

In February 2011, Maersk announced the arrival of ten Triple-E ships with a total capacity of 18,000 TEU. The new class of container ships were to be built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in South Korea. In June 2011, Maersk had already decided for an additional ten ships.

The first of Maersk’s Triple-E container ships was completed in July 2013. The ship is 400 m long, 59 m wide and 73 m high and has a tonnage of 165,000 tons. It will be manned by 22 crew, but the ship can be operated with just 13 crew.

The Triple-E design principles

As part of the plan to reduce the Triple-E ships’ impact on the environment, they will sail at an average speed of 16 knots (=30 km/hour). The slower the ships sail, the less fuel they will burn. Maersk’s plan is to use the ships on routes between Europe and Asia.

Lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions combined with increased capacity are the central themes of the Triple-E design principles: Energy efficient, Environmentally improved, and Economy of scale.

A complete ship in just 32 weeks

The DSME shipyard in Okpo, South Korea is able to complete the construction of a Triple-E container ship in just 32 weeks. By first constructing 24 ‘mega blocks’ and then assembling the ship, Maersk and DSME have been able to reduce valuable time in the dock.

Triple-E’s sanitary discharge system

BLÜCHER has worked on the Triple-E project since 2011 with several meetings held at the DSME shipyard. BLÜCHER has been chosen to supply stainless steel pipes and fittings for the ships’ sanitary drainage system.

BLÜCHER’s sanitary discharge system is a non-combustible, light-weight and hygienic choice. Additionally, the system offers a long life time and can be recycled after use in line with the Triple-E design principles.
